Allegiance Ranch and Equine Rescue – May 2018 Newsletter

May is almost over, which means we’re on the final countdown to our first annual Open House and Family Fun Day fundraiser! We’re looking forward to a great day and the opportunity to meet many new friends. We hope you will join us and bring your friends and families!

Please join us on June 10, 2018 from 12-4. Tickets are FREE through or our Facebook page. We’d love you to get tickets so that we have a rough idea of how many people to expect. There will be food for purchase including the Kona Ice truck from 1-3. We’ll have a DJ spinning tunes all afternoon and LIVE MUSIC with members of The Sweet Lillies from 1-3. There will be tours of the ranch to introduce our rescue horses plus family-friendly activities including pony rides, goat petting zoo, a bouncy house (for 8 and under), games, and a silent auction. We’ll have special guest, Cory Hixson and his family, with introductions and public remarks at 2:00 p.m. The open house and fundraiser will help us more widely share our mission at Allegiance Ranch and serve as our primary fundraiser for 2018.

GOODBYE SWEET KAINE: Our sweet and funny senior horse, Kaine, who came to Allegiance Ranch last September after he had been rescued but had no where to go, passed over the rainbow bridge to pain-free pastures on Monday, April 30th. He enjoyed lush green grass and treats before being humanely euthanized with many loving arms wrapped around him. His health had rapidly deteriorated over the last couple of months as a result of Cushing’s disease. Big thanks to all who came to help and send him out with love: Tammy and Mike Wilson, Gary Block, Michelle Mrsan, Jeff Nieusma, and Marissa and Gaby Timmons.

ALLEGIANCE RANCH IN THE NEWS: Many of you have heard our story about veteran Cory Hixson, who sought refuge in our barn after being overmedicated by the VA. While hiding in a dirty hog pen, he overheard us talking about our dreams for Allegiance Ranch (to help horses and heroes) before we had even moved in! Meeting Cory and his sweet family in person, and hearing their struggle, solidified our plans to do everything we can to support our country’s veterans. Reporter Anusha Roy, 9News, recently visited the ranch to do a story about Cory’s impact and highlighted our plans for Allegiance Ranch.

AMAZON SMILE: Did you know you can support Allegiance Ranch every time you shop on Amazon? Simply visit and search for Allegiance Ranch and Equine Rescue to select us as the charity you would like to support. A portion of the proceeds from your purchases will be donated to Allegiance Ranch.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION PICNIC: We were happy to celebrate our wonderful volunteers by hosting an informal barbecue at the ranch on April 28th. It was a great turnout and we loved meeting family members. We couldn’t do what we do without our amazing volunteers!

SUMMER VOLUNTEER HOURS: Our next Volunteer Orientation Session is scheduled for June 16, 2018 from 9:30-12. We are always happy to welcome new volunteers to join our already wonderful crew! Orientation Sessions are held the third Saturday of each month, but we can also provide orientation by appointment so don’t hesitate to reach out if there is another date/time that works better for you. We’ve updated our open volunteer hours for the summer! You’re welcome to drop in during any of the volunteer hours posted and stay for 30 minutes or the whole time, whatever fits your schedule.

Mondays 8:30 to 10:00 a.m.

Tuesdays 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Wednesdays 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Thursdays 8:30 to 10:00 a.m.

Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Please note: Regular volunteer hours may change or be canceled due to weather or other demands. We will do our best to notify volunteers by email or text in advance if hours must be canceled.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS: Please join us in welcoming two new members to the Allegiance Ranch Board of Directors: Tammy Wilson, DVM and Lindsay Neitenbach. Tammy, a veterinarian, has been donating her time and energy to helping us keep our horses healthy and cared for from the inside out! Not only does she help with routine vaccinations, she’s “on call” to help with emergencies…which come up quite often with horses. We are so grateful for her expertise, her patient support, and her genuine love of horses. Lindsay was one of our first volunteers at Allegiance Ranch and what a godsend she has been! Lindsay has been around horses her whole life and studied Equine Science at CSU. She is our resident expert on horse training and handling, and has been a consistent presence at the ranch. We are so grateful for her time, her positive energy, and the loving way she works with the horses. Thank you both!

HORSE UPDATES: Gizmo, one of our miniature donkeys, had surgery at the CSU Veterinary Hospital last week. Castration, which is typically an onsite, routine medical procedure, required surgery under anesthesia for the little guy because he was chryptorchid (a testes failed to distend). He made it through like a champ and is recovering nicely. Valor, who celebrated his one-year birthday in March, also underwent a medical procedure for castration. The wonderful vets from the Animal Clinic in Fort Lupton were able to conduct the procedure onsite and Valor did great. Victory, Valor’s momma, has been in training with Lindsay over the last several months and is doing amazing. Lindsay has Victory getting used to a saddle and anticipates a first ride in the very near future! Lindsay has also been working with Tasha and she’s doing great, learning her ground manners and that people can be trusted. Livy, our youngest and newest rescue, is slowly coming around. Where we couldn’t touch her at all when she first arrived, she’s becoming more comfortable and will allow us to rub her forehead, and just this week allowed a rub on her neck while being hand fed. Progress!

First Issue

Welcome to the first issue of the Allegiance Ranch and Equine Rescue (ARR) monthly newsletter! We’re excited to have this forum to communicate what’s going on at the ranch and the ways we’ll be helping horses and supporting veterans. We would love to hear from you with feedback and suggestions for future content.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HORSE EXPO 2018: ARR was happy to participate in the 2018 Rocky Mountain Horse Expo at the National Western Complex in Denver. It was a great three days of meeting new friends and spreading the word about our mission at Allegiance Ranch. Thanks to all of you who stopped by to say hello, signed up for the newsletter and shared your connections with horses and heroes. We were honored to meet so many veterans, too. Big thanks to those who have begun volunteering with us as a result of meeting us at the Expo. So exciting! And last but not least, we connected with an adopter for our beautiful rescue Stella while at the Expo. These two seemed to be meant for each other and are happily getting to know one another.

SAVE THE DATE! We will be hosting our first annual Open House at Allegiance Ranch on June 10, 2018. We hope to see you there! There will be food, live music, games, pony rides, goat petting zoo, and a silent auction. More details to come soon! This open house and fundraiser will help us more widely share our mission at Allegiance Ranch and Equine Rescue and serve as our primary fundraiser for 2018. All proceeds will be used for the direct care of horses and development of veteran programs and services. This includes our hay purchases for the year. The cost of hay to keep all of the horses fed each year is almost $9000! This is hay cost only, and does not take into account the volunteer time and labor to bring the hay down from the mountains. If you, someone you know or your employer would like to serve as a sponsor of the event or are able to donate a silent auction item, please contact Gloria at 720-301-2533 or by email to .

NEWEST RESCUE: We are happy to introduce Livy, a little Dun filly who’s approximately 4-5 months old. We were contacted about Livy when her original rescue home fell through. One look at that sweet face, and how could we say no?

Our newest rescue, Livy, a six month old Dun filly

Livy has been in quarantine/foster care nearby and will be coming to meet her friends at Allegiance Ranch soon. We believe Livy was living in a pasture with other horses but without much human contact. She’s learning to trust and seems very mellow so far. Look for more information about this sweet girl in future newsletters!

Gizmo and Gaby ready to meet new friends at Tractor Supply Lafayette

NEW TRACTOR SUPPLY CO: We were pleased to be invited to participate in the Grand Opening celebration at the new Tractor Supply Co. in Lafayette last weekend. Our miniature donkey Gizmo served as a wonderful ambassador for the ranch, looking cute and accepting lots of attention and ear rubs. He made lots of new friends and helped us introduce Allegiance Ranch and Equine Rescue to the Lafayette community!

HORSE UPDATES: All of the rescues at ARR are doing well, enjoying the warmer temperatures and budding grass. Kaine, our senior rescue with Cushings Disease, continues to do well although keeping weight on him is a constant concern. He receives lots of love and attention from our volunteers and enjoys his grain daily.

Kaine getting some love from volunteer Heather

Kaine is still in need of a sponsor. $50 a month helps pay for his feed, farrier and veterinary needs. As his sponsor, you’ll receive personal updates and photos of Kaine each month and opportunities to visit and groom him. Tasha, the rescued mare who arrived at ARR with her filly (Tilly) last Fall has been among the most challenging to earn trust.

She has come so far this Spring! She can be haltered, finally had her feet trimmed and even wore a soft saddle this week! We’re thrilled at the progress she’s making and look forward to seeing what she can achieve next.

Valor recently had his first birthday! He’s a curious guy, easily finds trouble and is growing into one gorgeous horse. While he’s been a challenge to halter train, he’s slowly coming along. We’re pleased to announce that Valor has a sponsor! Thank you to Alex and Bridget for sponsoring our little man!
