The Allegiance Ranch community is made up of incredible people whose stories remind us why this mission matters. Through our Community Spotlight series, we’re honored to introduce the veterans, first responders, volunteers, and supporters who make Allegiance Ranch such a special place.
Today, we’re proud to introduce Steve Lewton, a Navy veteran who found connection, purpose, and peace at the ranch. Steve volunteers regularly and participates in several of our veteran programs, including the Veteran Muster and horsemanship clinics. In his own words, he shares how the horses, the community, and the mission of Allegiance Ranch have become an important part of his life.

Steve with Mariposa
What initially drew you to Allegiance Ranch?
I initially came to Allegiance Ranch because of my wife. She volunteered here a few years ago and also brought me to one of the monthly Musters. From the beginning, I felt welcomed and had several really meaningful conversations. As life eventually slowed down and I found myself with some extra time, I wanted to give back to the community. Since I’d worked with horses since I was a child, volunteering at the ranch felt like a natural fit. The mission and values of Allegiance Ranch really resonated with me, and I wanted to contribute in whatever way I could.
What do you find most meaningful or enjoyable about volunteering at the ranch?
What I love most is how the experience grounds me. No matter what kind of day or week I’ve had, being around the animals brings me back to the present moment. Working with horses requires you to be alert and aware of everything around you. They sense emotions that I may not even realize I’m carrying, so I have to slow down, breathe, and recenter myself. That’s something I’ve found incredibly valuable, not just at the ranch, but in everyday life as well.
Do you have a favorite horse?
I enjoy spending time with all of the horses, but Mariposa has a special place in my heart. Her story really spoke to me. My previous experience with horses has helped me work with her, especially because she can be feisty depending on the day. Over the past few months, building trust with her has been incredibly rewarding. The bond we’ve developed continues to grow, and I always look forward to seeing her when I come to the ranch.
What would you tell someone who’s thinking about participating in a program or volunteering at the ranch?
It’s hard to put into words all of the benefits that come from spending time at the ranch. Everyone is welcoming, supportive, and always willing to help if you’re unsure about something. The sense of community among the volunteers is incredible. Dan and Gloria have built something truly special, and I’m constantly inspired by what they’ve created. I’m grateful to be able to play even a small part in supporting the mission.
